Colorado River Rafting is a Trip.
Visualize the boat’s brow cutting through the swirling,
surging water; the sun sparkling on the frothy waves, making
tiny rainbows; the abrupt lurch of the craft, as the surging
waves suddenly shift direction. The adrenalin is pumping,
all senses alert, with nature working overtime to orchestrate a thrill you’ll never forget. That’s what most people think a raft trip entails, but there’s much more going on. Your connection with the other rafters forms a matchless adventure that won’t be forgotten.

Picture yourself in a boat on a river, with thousands of pines and sapphire skies. Unlike the old Beatles song, this need not be just a dream. For families seeking a dream-like vacation, there are river trips in the Pacific Northwest that will leave you feeling recharged, reconnected, and well rested. Imagine no loud noises (except for the periodic rumbling of an upcoming rapid). Imagine the only distraction being whether or not you should (go ahead!) have another piece of grilled salmon as you sit with family and friends along a whispering, middle-of-nowhere wilderness waterway.

If white water rafting is something that you have already become addicted to, or if it is something that you want to try, then a white water rafting package is an ideal option for you. With some exceptions, most white water rafting seasons run from May to mid October. Most offer family packages as well as the more adventurous packages for the seasoned rafter. You only have to decide where you want to go to take on this adventure.

This summer my family and I enjoyed a week of rafting on the pristine Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. Before we went on the river to begin our six day rafting trip, a forest ranger with the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, instructed us as to the rules and regulations that must be observed to maintain the pollution free river. She talked with us about the damaging effects of micro trash; those small, inconsequential things that we leave behind without a second thought. To name a few: dental floss, hairpins, matches, stray coins, toothpicks, and buttons. We were told that there were to be no remains, whatsoever, left behind when we exited a campsite. Ten thousand people a year go on the river, and when all is said and done, there should be nothing left behind to indicate that anyone at all has paid the river a visit.

As you approach the first big rapid of the day, you hear the roar. Salmon Falls is a five-foot wave drop around car-sized rocks, and now you and your family drift toward the edge.
“Easy forward,” your guide requests, as you paddle to gather momentum.
The boat surges forward. Everyone paddles together to power the raft onto the blue tongue of water that will take you to the center of the foaming froth below.
“Okay, team, here we go! Left turn!” the guide yells. The boat then spins to face dead ahead into the roller coaster maelstrom. “Looks like fun! Let’s run the drop. Forward hard!”

Planning any type of vacation is fun and exciting as the possibilities are endless and you can do whatever you want! If what you want to do is go on a mountain biking vacation, there are many things to keep in mind to ensure you and your family have a great time.
Equipment: At bare minimum, you’ll need a bike for every member of your party. Where you intend to ride will determine what type of bike you want to have–off road adventures require a mountain bike with big knobby tires, shocks, and a sturdy frame. For long trips on paved roads, you’ll want a sleek road bike with skinny tires. Depending on the technical nature of your planned trip, or possible weather conditions, you’ll want to check out specialized biking clothing which will allow you to be comfortable longer in the elements.
