The very human trait of wanting to go up and explore, to push the human limits of endurance has led to some fantastic discoveries in the past.
However hiking can be a dangerous sport, and whether one is a professional mountaineer or just a backpacker, one needs special hiking equipment and gear to be able to indulge in this activity. Hiking Equipment and gear consist of special clothing and boots, accessories including walking sticks or hiking poles, several types of packs, and water bottle, first aid kit, and emergency rations. That apart, one could carry whatever one deems necessary- items like hammocks, note-pads, and perhaps a mobile phone.

Beginner hikers sometimes overlook two simple facts about hiking clothing for warmth. First is that hiking clothing is not primarily designed to keep the cold out but to keep the heat in from the only source of heat i.e. yourself.
Second is that when you are wearing hiking clothing for warmth, you are not trying to be as warm as possible but to reach a thermal equilibrium i.e. a state in which your heat production roughly balances your heat loss so that you remain within your comfort zone whether you are on the move, on the move and sweating, sitting still and sitting still and sweating.

Summertime is the time when folks want to take to the wilderness. If you are planning a hiking trip into the mountainous areas there are special considerations. One of these is making sure that you are physically fit enough to undertake this sort of trip.
Occasionally travelers who are not accustomed to higher altitudes can experience Altitude Sickness. Another term for this is Mountain Sickness or hypoxia. When you travel in the mountains, you need to be aware that your body needs to work harder to maintain the normal ratios of oxygen in the bloodstream because the air pressure is 30% lower at the higher altitude due to the fact that the atmosphere is less dense.

The Appalachian Trail makes up one third of the Triple Crown of United States long distance hiking and runs about 2,178 miles. Home to over 2,000 rare species of plants and animals, it starts at Springer Mountain in the state of Georgia and runs all the way to Mount Katahdin in Maine. Animals that are commonly seen along the trail include moose, elk, timber rattlesnakes, and copperheads. Although some sections cross through towns and over rivers and roads, the majority of the trail travels through wilderness.
